Highways

2014-05-31

tl;dr: Today was spent on hot highways and ended in a motel. Pretty boring.

I've picked a lot of bad camping spots over the years, but last night's was a new worst.

There was a party across the road, and very loud cars kept coming and going. Then two vehicles full of drunk teenagers pulled up to the church shouting inanities such as "where are my pants?" and "you're going to get us arrested." One truck's headlights were right on me, yet none of them ever noticed. This was 3 AM.

A couple of hours later I was on the road. Then on the highway. I spent most of the day on highways. Most of the time there was a very wide margin. This only disappeared when rolling through towns, a usual. I once veered off onto gravel roads, but the gravel was soft and tread into a nasty washboard pattern. I quickly gave up on that.

The wind pushed me along all day, which made peddling easier, but man was it hot. And humid. I had rinsed out one of my shirts this morning and strapped it to the outside of a bag. It never did dry.

I wimped out and found myself a hotel in Hubbard. It was kind of a hole, but better than camping.
