City of Rocks

tl;dr: After many many miles of more boring desert bicycling, I reached the City of Rocks and Picnic Tables.

I made good time again today. I've had the wind to my back for days now. It almost feels like cheating. But when traversing miles and miles and miles and miles of desert on absolutely straight, boring roads, cheating isn't so bad.

From Las Cruces, I took I10 and local roads east into Deming, NM. Then I turn west and followed Highway 180 north toward Silver City, but turned off to see City of Rocks State Park.

City of Rocks is more city and less rocks than I liked. Though I took a number of pictures, it is actually hard to find decent angles that aren't encumbered by picnic tables and concrete platforms and trails. I've never visited a natural point of interest that was so built up. This being a holiday weekend, there were quite a few folks here, and all of the camping sites were occupied. I wasn't planning on camping here, anyway.

Instead of returning to the highway to Silver City, I took a more indirect route along the Mimbres River, where there are actual trees. After a few hours I found a place to camp where trees were growing between a cattle fence and the road.

good morning World's Biggest Chili

do not pick up hitchhikers

my last Border Patrol checkpoint

miles and miles and miles

train in front of the Florida Mountains

hello horny toad

they are actually easy to catch if you can see them

imagine how long this can has been sitting here

more crops

City of Rocks State Park

Table Mountain

finally, a decent place to camp
