Amish Mansions

2015-09-13

tl;dr: I visited the Fontana Interpretive Nature Center and biked through many nice Amish farms.

The town of Hazleton is stingy with their water. The hydrant at the park was chained. The faucet at the gas station was dry. I decided to bike around the post office, because I've had good experience getting water from the USPS. The post office had a very narrow, very grassed-over ditch next to it which was the perfect size to catch my front tire. Face plant. Over the handlebars and right into the gravel. That's going to leave a mark. I found no water at the post office, either.

I discovered the Fontana Interpretive Nature Center by accident. I wasn't even planning on heading this way. A bunch of rescue animals are on display here.

It's easy to see how slow I'm going on these roads, because every single intersection is one mile from the previous intersection. I've only gone another mile?

I spent much of the morning biking through Amish lands. It being Sunday, the Amish were pretty scarce. I'm used to Amish living in run-down houses, but that isn't the case here. These houses are huge, and they are nice. Some farms I couldn't be sure were Amish. I'd see no power or vehicles, but there are satellite dishes on the roof.

There is a park in Dewar with a sign indicating that "Horses are prohibited in the park." I guess that comes up a lot. The park has no water.

I ended the weekend in Waterloo, Iowa.
