Maquoketa Caves State Park

tl;dr: I crossed into Iowa and rode mostly dirt roads until Maquoketa Caves State Park where I camped.

I need to be more diligent in checking my maps. The dirt roads here go in all directions due to the hills, and I keep taking wrong turns.

I took dirt roads across Iowa for the most part. Little traffic, but tough peddling at times. Eventually I made my way to Maquoketa Caves State Park. I only had an hour or so to view the caves before dark, so I rushed. My bicycling shoes are not proper caving attire. I highly recommend visiting this park. Just spend more time than I did.

I paid for camping. Some lessons you have to periodically re-learn. My neighbors were nice: a couple from England. But the population at large? HOW MANY TIMES DO YOU NEED TO SLAM THAT CAR DOOR?! And screaming kids. And somebody kept beaming my tent with their high-power flashlight. So much noise. At least there was a hot shower.

Good morning strange work of art.

another fun crossing of the Mississippi River

Still crossing the Mississippi. And Welcome to Iowa!

STILL crossing the Mississippi

I found a snake in the road.

I spent much of today on roads like this.

I don't know.

The Hurst Lime Works. Apparently it required these giant kilns to pull usable lime from limestone.

Barbell Cave

Shinbone Cave (I think)

The inside of a lot of these caves is just a room.
