The Terraced Hills

tl;dr: More hills. More humidity. Same old same old.

I had no strength this morning. Maybe it was the humidity. Or all the mosquito bites. Or the storms that kept me awake. Or that my tent turned into a sauna with the rain fly up. Or these soft, muddy, hilly roads. Or my horrible diet. Or maybe I'm just wimpy.

One thing I can say for Iowa is that the drivers are very curtious to bicycles. I don't think I've been passed closely by a car yet in this state. It might help that I stick to backroads.

One thing I can say against Iowa is that it is stupid hilly. I keep thinking, today is the day Iowa flattens out. And it seems to get worse! I'm not even embarrassed about pushing my bike up hills anymore. Where I am now the hills are so steep that the farmers have literally terraced most of the land so they can farm it.

The afternoon was pleasant enough with a north wind blowing away humidity. Then the wind swung around to the south and the humidity returned with a vegance.

good morning covered bridge driveway

I'm still seeing a lot of deer around here.

This road is peanut butter, so I am pushing my bike along the ditch.

I had to do some miles on a highway today. My lane is that six inches between the rumbles and the gravel.

lots and lots of windmills in this area

Avoca, Iowa. It bugs me way more than it should that this beetle has eight legs.

terraced hills

I'm just going to sleep on the ground tonight.
