Dinosaur Tracks

To get to my tirst stop of the day it was all downhill. Very, very downhill. I actually walked my bicycle down a mile of rocky road, because it would have just ruined my brakes and tires trying to coast it.

I visited the ghost town of Grafton. It wasn't too interesting. I had hoped to just hop across the river to get on the highway, but everything there was fenced off for cattle. No open range. Also, the little I could see of the river looked crazy muddy. So I peddled four or five miles around to the highway.

I stopped at a Chinese Buffet in Hurricane. They were doing surprisingly poor business.

I wasted a few hours at a shelter behind one of the city's many megachurches. The city likes big, fancy churches. It is Utah, I guess.

I'm kind of dragging my feet. I've started making good time, and my estimate now has me arriving in Nevada two or three days ahead of schedule. I probably could have visited the Grand Canyon after all.

My rear tire continues to thwart me with flats. It seems the problem lies in the tire's side walls rather than where the tread meets the road. There are tears, and the tube gets worn down at the tears, and the slime in the tube can't really seal. I will attempt to replace the tire tomorrow in St George.

I visited some exposed dinosaur tracks in the desert. I found some small ones that were slightly larger than turkey tracks. That's neat. Then I found the big ones. I'd hate to run into a critter capable of making tracks like that.

I stopped early to camp because I was right on the edge of St George. Unfortunately, I didn't stop early enough. I should have gotten not only farther off the main road, but farther off of any sort of trail. Trucks and ATVs and motorcycles rumbled past me for hours even after the sun had set. People were shooting guns and setting off firecrackers. There were several cows in heat somewhere close. Later on the coyotes lit up.

good morning Utah

I had to walk my bike down this ''unmaintained steep grade road''.

Grafton Cemetery

Inside a house in Grafton. The ceiling is very low.

Turkeys can't get through the fence.

There are geese here?

Fort Zion is closed.

Gah! Why can't these people slow down?

ATV tracks in the sand

The road is so sandy I have to bike on this ATV trail.

good night Utah
