tl;dr: I visited Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers and picked up more hitchhikers.

I was on the road before sunrise. The Franz Josef Glacier carpark was completely empty when I arrived. Sweet. I hiked up to the glacier and had the whole thing to myself for a good whole ten minutes before other people began to show up. There were a few helicopters flying in for the fancy hikers, but they were surprisingly quiet.

I returned to Franz Josef town for coffee and picked up a kid hitchhiking south. He only needed to get to Fox Glacier to meet up with his parents, which was as far as I was going right then, anyway.

Fox Glacier wasn't quite as nice as Franz Josef Glacier in my opinion.

There is a track that leads to Welcome To Flat Hut, a hut that you can spend the night in if you have a reservation. The Department of Conservation's website wouldn't work to let me book a night. Also, I misread a trail description and thought the hike was 34 kilometers each way rather than 17 in and 17 out. So I skipped it. I would have liked to do that hike. I should have planned better.

Leaving Fox Glacier I picked up Emma. She's Finish. I brought her all the way to Wanaka. Along the way we stopped at a few roadside sights. I decided to get a room at the Matterhorn Lodge hostel where Emma already had a reservation. Tomorrow I shall try to do some more hiking.
