Mount Aspiring

2016-12-05

tl;dr: I did some hiking around "Mount Aspiring".

There must be an actual "Mount Aspiring" here, but whatever. That is what the area is called. It takes an hour of driving to get there from Wanaka.

I hiked up to Aspiring Hut, which is in a valley. It wasn't super exciting. So on the return I branched off and hiked up to Rob Roy Glacier. It was kind of neat.

Realizing I could make it to the Kiwi Birdlife Park in Queenstown before it closed at 5 PM I hiked out very fast and drove very fast back to Wanaka and on to Queenstown. Along the way I spotted Anna getting out of a van. She was at one of the hostels I stayed at all the way north of Auckland. I stopped and said hi.

In Wanaka two girls were hitchhiking to Queenstown with another guy also hitchhiking farther on. I assumed the two girls had arrived first, but it turns out they had broken hitchhiker protocol. When hitching, if you arrive at a pickup point second, you move farther downstream of traffic so the person there first gets picked up first. The girls wanted to fit all three of them in my car, but they had ridiculously big suitcases, so they let the guy, Jessie, get in and waited. I'm sure they didn't have to wait long.

Jessie is from Florida and had been working in Wanaka for five months. He was on his way to the Queenstown airport to meet his parents who were flying in. Jessie is now my seventh hitchhiker.

In Queenstown I found Kiwi Birdlife Park, but there were people everywhere and parking was hard to find and when I did find parking there was a guy walking around giving out tickets, and I didn't know how long I could park for, so I got stressed out and just left.

I drove an hour and turned down a gravel road hoping to find a camping spot. The road turned very rough, and I decided I should probably leave, but then I had a flat tire. Awesome. After removing it, I tried pumping it up with a bicycle pump, but it clearly had a puncture. Knowing any mechanics in the area would be closed at 5 PM, I just put on the spare and set up camp right there, because I didn't want to drive too far with the spare on.

There are a lot of penned deer here.

There are a lot of bridges like this here.

On the way to Queenstown looks like California.

The mountains block rain from getting here.

I wonder if this is a Queenstown official?
