2012-06-07 tl;dr: I'm now in Alabama. In a "dry" county. Guess I won't be hitting the bar tonight. If you enjoy the affections of venomous and parasitic insects you should really consider visiting Mississippi. There are also a lot of beavers. The Nashville Ferry Landing had coffee. I hate coffee. I hated all three cups. After portaging at the Tom Bevill Lock and Dam I took a break. While laying under a shade tree on a clay beach, suddenly I saw the river's water rise several inches, and my kayak's tail end was pulled around into a sudden current. I can only assume the dam above me was opened up. I quickly got back onto the water in hopes of taking advantage of the current, but it was already gone. The final stretch of the Tombigbee River in Mississippi had a number of houses and boats on it. This dropped off substantially once I crossed over into Alabama. Apparently being in a "dry" county adversely affects people's desire to be on the water. I'm told it's illegal to have alcohol anyplace but in your own house. |
