Tacking

tl;dr: I tacked directly into the wind all day long and now am camping with a billion crabs.

Gah, I'm really starting to hate sailing. It's like you have no control. Today I needed to travel southeast. So, obligingly, the wind was out of the southeast. It was a decent wind, so I couldn't easily peddle into it. Tacking was better, except that boat doesn't steer too well when tacking. Also, every time I pushed too close to shore I'd almost get stuck in shallow water weeds. Occasionally a storm would roll through completely upsetting whatever wind pattern I'd figured out.

All in all I only made 28 miles today as the crow flies. I'm sure I zigzagged more than that. In comparison, yesterday I made over 40.

I had hoped to get to my next stop early on Sunday. That doesn't look too likely now.

I ended up camping on an island near Keaton Beach. There are about a billion fiddler crabs on this island. I don't think that is an exaggeration. They are all around my tent making obnoxious digging and clicking noises.

sigh

clear and shallow

oh look, another storm -- imagine that

millions of crabs
