Peddling Along
2012-07-01 Panama City >

2012-06-30

tl;dr: I spent most of the day peddling, because I had no wind in my sail.

I have mixed feelings about my new boat. On the one hand it's slower than just about every other sailboat I've met. On the other hand I was able to start peddling before sunrise, and I made good time until a wind finally kicked in around 10 AM. That wind wasn't very impressive. So I mostly kept peddling after that. So I was wrong about not getting exercise.

And yes, it's peddling, not paddling. The Islander has foot peddles. They work pretty well. It's something like riding a recumbant bicycle.

I was following advice and taking the Intracostal Waterway rather than the coast. On the one hand it's safer. On the other hand, it's too far inland here to have any decent wind, especially on the canals.

I haven't been bitten by ants lately. Not that the itchy bites from weeks ago have healed up yet.

Usually when I set up camp, I leave my tent open until the mosquitoes show up. There are so many biting flies here I can't do that. They zoom right into the tent.

Here is a very bad video I made with my camera:
