As sudden as ever

2012-07-19

tl;dr: Another trip done. That's how it goes. I racked up nearly 2000 miles this time.

Well, I'm done. Again.

On Saturday night I immediately set about selling my kayak. Nobody in this town is interested in such a boat, so I resorted to the internet. At first I listed it for $2500. Then I dropped it to $1500 a day later. That's half of what I paid for it. Such must be my priorities.

I spent most of the week in Steinhatchee in that expensive (but, admittedly, pretty nice) condo. It rained every day, although usually not for long. I watched a constant stream of scallop hunters making their way down the NO WAKE channel across the street from my room. I ordered scallops one night. They are pretty good.

Even if I wasn't weighted down with this kayak, leaving Steinhatchee would have been challenging. There are no buses or shuttles or anything, really.

I probably could have sold it more quickly and at less of a loss, except nobody had ever heard of Steinhatchee, and few wanted to drive that far. Eventually a buyer drove all the way from Pensacola (mere miles from where I bought it) and picked it up. He was nice enough to give me a ride to Tallahassee.

Of course, now I wish I would have pressed on for another week or two. The brain doesn't remember pain, after all. Instead I will start slowly making my way back north. Well, not as slowly as I got down here.

All in all I paddled and sailed nearly two-thousand miles. I guess that isn't bad. There's a map over to the right.

Also, I made a video about the Hobie kayak. It's not so much a review as a series of random observations.
